Zhangye (CHN), 1 augustus 2010
Etappe 58, 256 km N 38˚56.034 O 100˚26.987, Hoogte 1484m

GBR  We’ve passed 20.000 km today of our trip and stay near the most western point of the Chinese Wall. It’s a special moment after all! Of course we climbed the wall (we’ll be feeling that in our legs for days). It’s only such a pity that the wall has been restored so nicely here, so it’s almost impossible to get an idea of how old it actually is.

Our second stage on a real Chinese highway. So our trip today was quite fast. On the way there wasn’t too much change, mostly desert and sometimes a little oasis with some agriculture. It was still cloudy and warm with little sun. For travelling it’s good weather, but for the view and the pictures a bit less of course. The two most important topics of an overlander: the road and the weather!

In Zhangye we had a good time. And not only us, because also Marco Polo liked is so much that he stayed a whole year, so there’s still a monument of his in town. Zhangye has a magnificent Buddhist temple with a large lying Buddha, a high wooden pagoda, and a few traditional streets where we strolled around and had food. Also in Zhangye we’re the only westerners and therefore everybody stares at us and at our Laro.
