Yarkand (CHN), 22 juli 2010
Etappe 51,202 km N 38˚24.856 O˚ 77.14.680, Hoogte 1250 m
Thanks to a new map and a Lonely Planet, we’re able to find our way in this new and last country on our trip along the Silk Road. We still need to download new GPS maps, but on the other side, we’re accompanied by a guide now who can tell us where to go. And once you leave the city, there’s only one straight Silk Road to follow anyway. On our first stage to Yarkand, we drove on quite small roads and passed lots of little villages. In one of them, we stopped for the local market where they sold cloths, fruits, and even slaughtered animals. Especially the soup with the cow heads didn’t look too appalling to us. So, our destination today was Yarkand, an old Silk Road town. By now however, it has transformed into a modern Chinese city where only a few of the old city parts remain. We find it quite interesting and strange to find such a big and modern town in the outskirt of China. Imagine what will await us the further we drive east.
